"Aria I"

For English Horn and Marimba, Harp, or Piano

This piece was my first ever attempt at writing chamber music involving percussion. Naturally, I had no idea how to write for Marimba, but the instrument had fascinated me a good deal. I got some help from a friendly acquaintance from Florida State and, under her tutelage, came up with this little ditty.

Sadly, the work was lost for a little while due to a hard disk crash on my home PC. Fortunately, I was able to reconstruct it using a MIDI file I made.

The work is in D minor and has a main melody that alternates between 6/8 and 3/8. Aria I is dedicated to the lovely and talented Jenny Sultzer, a percussionist from Hawaii who taught me a good deal of what I know about marimba music.

Aria I has yet to be premiered. :-)
