WEEK 9

WHEN     : Tuesday 18th May 1999
WHERE    : SPX - GLS - SPX in N1219F, a Cessna 172N
WHAT     : ILS and VOR approaches, NDB holds
WHO      : Safety pilot: Robert Winkler
HOW LONG : 1.0 flight; 0.8 hood

It's good to have a safety pilot who will occasionally pull some surprises on you. Scant moments after takeoff, the attitude indicator suddenly "failed"...Again...

First we went to do an approach at Galveston. Galveston is conviniently close to Houston Gulf, so it's almost imperative to do a practise approach into GLS. I did a hold (that worked out fine) at the outer marker - this made way for some traffic already in the pattern, then completed the approach. Once we were on the miss from the approach, I decided to go to the Galveston NDB for some more practise at NDB tracking and holding. It wasn't quite as good as last week's effort, but still passable.

This was followed up by an approach back home to Houston Gulf, and a circle-to-land.

Conclusion

I feel my instrument flying is coming on nicely now. I can do ILS's pretty accurately (although it still has a bit of a habit of going a little awry towards the very end, but not so much that there's a problem with a subsequent landing).
